Pet cover Insurance Offers Insurance for Australian Pets

Petcover Insurance, a pet insurance company based in Sydney, Australia, has launched a range of pet insurance products for Australian cats and dogs. The pet insurance available will be for cats and dogs that are aged between eight weeks and nine years. Petcover will insure cats for $13.75 a month and will insure dogs for $28.75 a month.

Managing Director of Petcover, Renae Dickey says the cost of insuring Australians pets is very minimal, compared to how much a veterinary bill can cost. Some veterinary bills can cost several thousand dollars. She also says that they commissioned ACA Research to do some research on their behalf about pet insurance in Australia. They found that 6,000 pets are put down every week because their owners cannot afford the health treatment that would save the pet's life. Ms Dickey says that most people "do not want to put a price on the life of a pet", but for many pet owners it is simply impossible to find the money to pay an unexpected veterinary bill that was not in cluded in the budget.

Petcover estimates that the market for pet insurance in Australia could end up being worth $1 billion and may even grow further. At the moment, pet insurance in Australia is not very popular. Only two percent of owners have their pet insured, and the market is only worth $10 billion. This is very small when compared to other countries, like the UK, where the pet insurance industry is worth $A25 billion.

Ms Dickey, says that Australia is ready for pet insurance. She says that Australians have "embraced health insurance" and asks why they shouldn't start insuring their cats and dogs.
