National Pet Owners Survey Reveals Details About Pet Insurance and Pet Health

The 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Survey, conducted by the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association Inc. (APPMA) has showed that pet insurance is growing in popularity. Even though the majority of pets are still uninsured, the number of cats and dogs that are insured has risen. The APPMA 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Survey show that 3 percent of dogs and 1 percent of cats are now insured by their owners. This has risen from the 2002 figures of 2 percent for insured dogs and 1 percent for insured cats.

Experts believe the rise in pet insurance may be partly as a result of advances in veterinarian medicine and the resulting rise in veterinary bills. Pet insurance is even being added to some employee benefits. Pet insurance companies are broading the range of policies they offer for pets. For example, Veterinary Pet Insurance Inc. (VPI) has added policies for birds, rabbits, turtles and snakes, to its policies for cats and dogs. VPI covers over 6,400 conditions and injuries that cats and dogs may suffer. This includes rashes, ear infections and cancer.

The rise comes despite the warnings by some consumer advocates that pet insurance is a gamble. They say that pet insurance may involve the pet owner paying for cover that their pet is never doing to need. They advise pet owners to shop around for a pet insurance policy and learn what the insurance will cover.

The APPMA's 2005-2006 National Pet Owners Society also revealed details about dental health for dogs. The survey showed that 80% of the dogs living in the US will need some form of dental care before they are three years old. Addressing this need is JAKKS Pacific, Inc. JAKKS have just released a new type of oral care dog treats, called White Bites, and other pet oral care products. They will be marketed under the division of JAKKS ™, JPI Pets ™. The products will be based on Arm & Hammer ®, the popular household consumer goods brand. The products are planned to be launched in the US in Spring of 2007.
