What Are The Factors That Affect Pet Insurance Quotes?

You’ve decided to buy pet insurance to help you defray the costs of your pet’s health care. It’s time to obtain some pet insurance quotes.
What exactly do you need to know before deciding what kind of pet insurance you need to buy? Understanding the ins and outs of pet insurance makes it a snap to compare insurance insurance quotes.
What Is A Pet Insurance Quote?
A pet insurance quote is the same as any insurance quote: a general price on a type of coverage you are buying to help defray the costs of your pet’s health care. You can get an insurance quote for your pet either online or from an insurance company that offers pet insurance. Depending on what you want in your coverage depends upon where you ultimately buy your insurance. As with anything else you buy, your needs determine the best avenue. Getting quotes from various places is a good idea to ensure that you’re finding the best coverage for your pet.
Factors Determining Cost of Insurance
As with any type of policy, many things affect the price of insurance for your pet. It’s important to be aware of how these factors affect pet insurance quotes when shopping for pet insurance.
Type of Animal
The majority of Americans have dogs or cats as pets. Some people, however, have some more exotic pets, like birds, snakes, iguanas, pigs, hamsters, or rabbits. These animals will need to see the vet sooner or later as well. Exotic pets have a lower cost of insurance, since they are rarely let outdoors and run a lower risk of accidental injury or sickness. Most insurance quotes will reflect these price differences, but keep in mind that pet insurance for exotic pets will not provide the kind of coverage that insurance for dogs and cats provides.
Breed
Animal breed is as much a factor in obtaining pet insurance as is the type of animal. Certain breeds carry with them certain health issues, which will affect the cost of insurance. Purebred dogs or cats will carry with it a much higher cost of insurance than a mixed breed, as mixed breeds are often heartier. Some breeds, like a Papillion or a Mastiff, will also cost more to insure. Cats are no different. Just like purebred dogs are more expensive to insure, purebred cats, like Abyssinians or Persians, are also more expensive to insure.
Health
Your healthy pet with no illnesses or accidents will have the lowest cost of insurance. If your pet has been treated for an illness, however, it could affect the quote you receive on your pet’s coverage. Additionally, you may need to talk to an agent if you are getting pet insurance quotes online to find out if your pet’s medical conditions are covered. Illnesses like feline leukemia, hip dysphasia, or any illness that could be considered congenital may not be covered by an ordinary policy.
