ASPCA Pet Insurance – Affordable and Humane

The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was in the news recently for rescuing more than 100 dogs in Camden County, Missouri, from a commercial dog breeding facility, commonly known as a puppy mill. The ASPCA is a non-profit organisation, which fights against cruel treatment of animals. The kennel owner called the ASPCA and informed them that he could not afford to take care of the dogs in his facility. ASPCA asked the Humane Society of Missouri to help in the care of the dogs. This incident has again shown the stellar work done by ASPCA in animal welfare. In keeping with this profile, the organisation offers ASPCA pet insurance policies in which part of the income from subscription to pet insurance plans goes to animal welfare programs.

The ASPCA was started by Henry Bergh in 1866, with the aim of fighting cruelty to animals. It works for comprehensive animal rights and carries out charity activities such as lobbying for passing animal welfare legislation, caring for animals that have faced abuse or neglect and running adoption centres. The ASPCA also has an animal hospital, Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, in its New York City headquarters. As part if its activities to help pet owners provide affordable care for their pets, the ASPCA runs mobile neuterisation procedures and vaccination free of charge for low-income pet owners. Affordable ASPCA pet insurance is another effort by the organisation to help pet owners provide medical care for their pets. The animal welfare organisation provides information regarding its activities and invites donations via a comprehensive website at www.aspca.org . You can also register as a volunteer at ASPCA.

This article reviews ASPCA pet insurance plans and takes a look at its features such as coverage, costs and how ASPCA ensures that plans purchased benefit animal welfare causes. The article concludes with ASPCA pet insurance contact info.

ASPCA Pet Health Insurance Plans

ASPCA pet health insurance plans are provided together with Hartville Group Inc, its only strategic partner. The pet insurance plans jointly provided by ASPCA and Hartville match ASPCA’s philosophy of providing affordable pet insurance so that pet owners can easily take care of the health needs of their pets. While the ASPCA believes in neutering or spaying of pets to control pet population, it opposes measures such as declawing procedures of cat’s claws, as it believes the cat is severely handicapped due to the procedure. A more humane approach such as providing scratch pads or claws filing is suggested. In line with its principled opposition to declawing, ASPCA pet insurance plans do not provide coverage for this procedure. Similarly, the insurance plans for pets do not cover tail docking (the lower part of the tail is removed) or ear cropping as the ASPCA considers it a form of animal cruelty, although many animal owners adopt such processes for the health of the animal. The pet insurance plans howev er do cover spaying and neutering of pet animals.

Hartville provides four levels of ASPCA pet health insurance plans, with each level providing more coverage than the previous level.

  • The first level of coverage is the most basic. It provides coverage for accidents, and accident-related x-rays, veterinary care and surgical operations.
  • The second level of coverage includes illnesses in addition to what was covered in Level 1 type of ASPCA pet health insurance plan. In addition, it provides coverage for continuing care for ongoing conditions.
  • In addition to second level coverage, Level 3 of ASPCA pet insurance covers spaying and neutering, vaccinations and annual checkups.
  • Level 4 of the pet insurance plan provided by ASPCA is the most comprehensive level of all, with the coverage extended to include advanced vaccination for conditions such as Feline Leukaemia and Bordetella. Steps to prevent Heartworm infection, which spreads among animals through a mosquito and affects the animal heart, are covered under Level 4 of the ASPCA pet insurance plan. Dental maintenance for the pets is also under coverage of this level.
All the levels of ASPCA pet insurance plans have 80% reimbursement and a US $ 100 annual deductible for every insured pet. As of October 2010, the maximum annual coverage for level 1 and level 2 is US $ 8000, which extends to $11,000 for level 3 and $ 13,000 for level 4 pet insurance plan of ASPCA.

A part of the income from pet insurance plan purchase goes to the ASPCA to support animal welfare activities.

Pet insurance works differently from human health insurance. In human health insurance plans, the claims for health expenses go directly from the doctor to the insurance provider. In pet insurance, you have to first pay the veterinarian and then claim for reimbursement from the pet insurance company. If you have ASPCA pet insurance for your pet animal, then after paying the veterinary facility out-of-pocket, you have to fill up and submit the ASPCA pet insurance claim form by fax, post or email. The claims form has to be submitted within 180 days of the start of the pet health care treatment, with a copy of the veterinary service invoice.

Some details required in the ASPCA pet insurance claim form include pet owner information, pet age, gender, breed and description of the pet health care service including dates.

ASPCA Pet Insurance Contact Info

The website of ASPCA Pet insurance gives detailed information regarding its plans and coverage. The claims form is also available for download from the website. It provides ASPCA pet insurance contact info including sales and customer care telephone numbers. An online free quote service is also available. ASPCA pet insurance allows its subscribers to manage their pet insurance plans online through their Member Centre.
