Congenital Defect

A congenital defect is a defect that an animal is born with. They occur because of genetic problems or accidents that happen to the mother during the gestation period.

Most pet insurance policies do not cover newborn animals. Since the newborn is not covered, the congenital defect will be considered a pre existing condition when the policy is started. For this reason, congenital defects are almost never covered by pet insurance companies.

It is possible to get a congenital defect covered if it is not diagnosed as a congenital defect, or diagnosed before the policy is purchased. However, most likely if a pet has a serious congenital defect, it will not be covered. A cleft palate, congenital heart defects, or hydrocephalus are examples of common congenital defects. If your pet is diagnosed with a congenital problem, look carefully for pet insurance policies that might cover the congenital problem, because they do exist.
